Farragut  Was  Here
Farragut shipmate and 1960 plankowner Dr. Bill Budd, on a recent trip to his mothers's
home, retrieved the Looking Aft Cruise book from the ships 1962-63 Med Cruise.  Inside he
found a long forgotten two page letter that chronicled the events of May 24, 1962 when
LCDR Scott Carpenter's Aurora 7 space craft missed it's re-entry by several hundred miles.
The story of what took place that day is perfectly told on these two aging yellowed pages.
For all who were there then, and perhaps all who sailed on Farragut afterward it was the
proudest day of all for an unheralded, but prepared ship that was in the right place that day.
Many thanks to our shipmate Bill Budd, QM2 for providing us with this interesting and very
special piece of Farragut history to share with all Farragut shipmates.

The small piece of retaining lanyard in the frame
below is part of the survival gear that was in
Aurora 7 as it orbited the earth.
Captain Adam A. Herron had these keepsakes
made for each crew member of the
USS Farragut (DLG-6) to keep as a token
remembrance of being a part of the events
of 24 May 1962
